I must thank the editors for giving me this space to say a very heartfelt Thank You to all the Councillors for the support they have given me during my time as Chair of the Parish Council. I have enjoyed that time very much, bouquets and Brickbats equally acceptable. I count it an honour and a privilege to have been able to serve Carharrack in this way. Please everyone support the Councillors in their work for the village, and think of what you can do to help. How many times have I heard “Why can’t they do something about ……………” Remember you are they too.

Dear Neighbours/Friends
I am organising a produce/arts/crafts market for Carharrack. I hope this will bring new opportunities and services to our village as well as promote community groups, producers and services within our village. I have already allocated space for ICE ,Trevethan Community Farm and our church. We would love to publicise any other community groups, events or activities, so please feel free to bring any information/leaflets to hand out or put on our community tables.
We are starting a fantastic new monthly indoor market every second Saturday of the month.
Starting on Saturday 14th April from 10am until 1pm at Mills Hall, Carharrack.I have done some research and tried to source some of the best quality producers in and around the local area. I feel it is always great to bring new energy into our village and will be great for networking!!!!
Produce so far includes - Organic breads, home-baked cakes (including wheat/gluten free), free-range organic eggs and pork joints/sausages, speciality pies, chutneys, jams, bedding plants, perennials and cottage garden plants. Craft includes beautiful hand-made functional pottery, wood turning, leather bags and notebooks, bunting, aromatherapy soaps, knitwear, customised baby wear and jewellery.
We also have a fantastic hairdresser on-site to do dry cuts at a promotional cost of £5, I am hoping to get someone to do manicures.
Let’s have a bit of pampering!!!! There will be Alice's Tea Room if you fancy a cuppa, cake and chat.

Carharrack Neighbourhood Watch
It has been brought to our attention that despite advertisement and contact to every household by letter, some people do not know that Carharrack has a Neighbourhood Watch Team. It has 7 coordinators covering most areas of the village and village watchers who supply information to the police. N H W have updated signs around the village and will continue to do so. We liaise with other agencies such as the Police and Local Councils.
Our aim is to keep our village a safe place to live and we believe that N H W in the village will enable us to do that. We still need more coordinators to join the team. The main functions of a coordinator are to report any suspicious behavior, help and keep in contact with your near neighbours, liaise with other coordinators and the local police
We stress that you should report urgent e.g. Crime or Anti Social Behaviour matters to the police by calling 999...
Non urgent calls to 101. You can contact the coordinators by phone/text or email, or we can arrange for police to ring you if you are concerned about seeing police outside your home.
If you are considering helping out with N H W, please contact one of the coordinators listed below.
We are also looking for ways in which to help younger members of the village such as a Youth Club or Drop In Centre.
If you have any ideas that you would like to put forward please contact us or come along to one of our meetings. The next meeting is in The Mills Hall on Tuesday 24th of April.2012

Back to Basics
I find it hard to believe that five months has passed since I left the parish of Newquay and my family and I moved into St Day as I became one of the Priests in the newly formed Eight Saint’s Cluster serving the parishes of St Day, Carharrack, Chacewater, Gwennap, Perran-ar-Worthal, Stithians, Devoran and Feock.
I am now beginning to find my way around and I am starting to get to know many of you in the churches, school, around the village and in other capacities. We had a good first Christmas in St Day and Carharrack and it was great to meet a good number of you at the school nativities, carol service, Christingle and Crib service on Christmas Eve and midnight Mass. It is also good to hear that the parent and toddler group which meets in St Piran’s Church, Carharrack on a Friday morning at 10am is beginning to grow as it attracts more families who can come in and have a coffee and a chat while the children play.
But with those joyous festivities of Christmas behind us and already a good but distant memory we start to move towards the season of Lent as we prepare for Easter. Lent is a time when we strip away all of the frills to get back to the basics of what it means to be Christian.
Lent may originally have followed Epiphany, just as Jesus’ sojourn in the wilderness followed immediately on his baptism, but it soon became firmly attached to Easter, as the principal occasion for baptism and for the reconciliation of those who had been excluded from the Church’s fellowship for apostasy or serious faults. This history explains the characteristic notes of Lent – self-examination, penitence, self-denial, study, and preparation for Easter.
As the candidates for baptism were instructed in Christian faith, and as penitents prepared themselves, through fasting and penance, to be readmitted to communion, the whole Christian community was invited to join them in the process of study and repentance, the extension of which over forty days would remind them of the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness, being tested by Satan. Just as Satan tried to tempt in the wilderness, we too face many temptations in life such as power, greed etc. and this is a really good opportunity for us all to look at our own lives and what we might want to reflect on, change, take on to help others or give up over the Lenten period and really get back to basics.
The sign of the cross on our foreheads serves not only to remind us that we are dust, but also as a reminder that God has a claim on us in Baptism. We do not know all of the particulars of our final destiny in Christ. But we do know that we belong to Christ, and the ashen cross is a reminder of that as well.
Below is the Introduction and invitation to Lent which is read at the beginning of Lent during the Ash Wednesday Service, which will be at Holy Trinity Church, St Day at 7pm on Wednesday 22nd February.
“Brothers and sisters in Christ, since early days Christians have observed with great devotion the time of our Lord’s passion and resurrection and prepared for this by a season of penitence and fasting.
By carefully keeping these days, Christians take to heart the call to repentance and the assurance of forgiveness proclaimed in the gospel, and so grow in faith and in devotion to our Lord. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God’s holy word”.
So in preparation, let us too, shed the things of this world and make room for God and to let him fill us and our lives with his love, as it will ultimately lead us to light and life in Christ, when after these 40 days, we come to celebrate the joyous resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

CARN MARTH TRUST
The CMT committee has come out of hibernation and here are some dates for your diaries......

Miracle events always attract a good crowd, so make sure you get your tickets as soon as they are available! We are already planning Carn Marth Day IV – rest assured that the Welly Throwing event will go ahead again. Some members were concerned that we should introduce some RULES, but this was felt to be too boring....
More details of the above will be available on the website soon, in the meantime, you can join us on Facebook if you are that way inclined!
If there are any local groups or individuals wishing to use the Theatre, please do get in touch either by email or telephone – we already have one Wedding Reception going ahead and also Lanner Band will again be making use of the space.
Litter continues to be a problem, with recently a dog being seriously injured by broken glass in the top quarry pool –
please help by taking all your belongings home with you and encouraging others to do the same! Many, many thanks to those wonderful people who habitually walk the Carn with a plastic bag or two at the ready to take home other people’s litter.

St. Piran’s Pop-In started in January with the aim of giving anyone looking after young children the opportunity to get together on a Friday morning where the Children can play and there is a cup of coffee or tea on offer for the carers. Mostly it is mums and dads who come but some of us are grandparents helping out while parents are working. We already have a selection of toys that the children enjoy and hope to add more as we go along. It is lovely to see the children getting to know each other and we hope that more will join us in the coming weeks. There is no obligation to come every week; the invitation is simply to ‘pop-in to the School Room at St. Piran’s Church any Friday morning. Whether you stay for half an hour or for the morning we will be delighted to see you.

TREVETHAN COMMUNITY FARM UPDATE February 2012
Hello again from your local community farm! Since we last posted news, lots of progress has been made and we’re excited to see the project beginning to take shape. Here are a few of our success stories.
Colin’s “Pigs and People” is expanding.
Lavender had her first ever piglet between Christmas and New Year. She is a lovely mum and the piglet is enormous.
The two young sows who have been helping clear the brambles in the TCF field grew winter coats in January so they are now known as “the hairy girls”
We are missing Percy, as he has gone away visiting some other girlfriends
We had a wonderful hard working group of Road Safety Council Volunteers come to clear the walls around the field and lop trees in February. The day was freezing cold so they had to tuck into a sausage breakfast and jacket potatoes at lunch to keep their strength up.
A group of young people from Princes Trust worked with us for three weeks. They knocked walls down, laid the foundations for our office/shed, rotavated the ground and even did some tree surgery. They were a lovely team to work with although they needed lots of cake and tea with three sugars to keep them going
The local Parish Councils have kindly provided funding for seeds and tools. Now that the ground is ready, planting is going to be in full swing
We have spent some of the Health Promotion grant of £270 on pipes to install outdoor taps in the field.
David and Sarah are working on the TCF Website to replace PigsandPeople. We want to log as much wildlife as possible
Anne has sorted the Trevethan Community Farm Facebook page
Groundwork UK will provide us with 16 days of expertise, including help from a fundraiser, a landscape designer and a horticulturist. They will also provide us with a grant of £800
We are trying to get an accessible composting toilet/tree bog. The group would like to get a tree bog with disabled access
Kate has donated an “Office” to TCF

THE MILLS TRUST
Despite the current gloomy financial situation we are happy to say that the Hall remains busy, with at least one let every day and/or evening in the week and a steady trickle of party bookings at the weekends. If you anyone is planning a party /show/craft fair, etc. for a Saturday in particular, please book as early are you can so that we can fit you in. Also for less happy occasions the Hall provides a warm and homely atmosphere for a chat and refreshments after a funeral, and is very often used for that purpose.
Looking forward, an early reminder to those who asked about this, the annual outdoor service will take place in the Mills Hall car park on Sunday 19th August. People of all faiths or of none are welcome to attend, and for tea and biscuits afterwards in the Hall. This includes those who hang over the wall to listen to The Band. The Trust is very grateful to the younger people in the band for their help with the teas last year.
Look out for posters about one off celebrations in the Hall over the Jubilee weekend, one of which we hope will be a Tea Dance.
7th April is the date of the Easter Fair and regular table top sales will be taking place monthly from 14th April on the 2nd Saturday of the Month.
This year is also the 100th Anniversary of The Carharrack and St Day Silver Band, who have their headquarters at the Hall. The Band will have an open day in the Hall on 5th May.
The Carharrack Players will be starting rehearsals soon for their Summer Entertainment, which this year will be a Play. New members and helpers are always welcome. The first meeting for this production will be on Thursday 29th March.

CARHARRACK ALLOTMENTS
Now the weather is beginning to warm up (we hope!!) it’s time to start getting our plots
in order ready for spring planting. Remember to look after your back. Take it easy at first and don’t try to dig over your whole plot in one day.
After the mild wet winter there will be plenty of slugs waiting to gobble up all our lovely produce!! Get an early start by putting down ‘slug pubs’ before they start to reproduce.
We have a small waiting list at the moment, but if you are interested in having an allotment, it’s worth putting your name down now, as people often decide to give up plots at the end of the year (which is 31st March). Give me a ring or email. Do think it through first – you need to have time and energy and it is a commitment.

CARHARRACK CONNECTIONS 


Recorder bag in the UK
A recorder bag is now living in the homeland of ABC television’s Doc Martin. Chelsea Loakes (nee Jobson),
formerly of Port Pirie and now of Adelaide, visited the United Kingdom recently with her bag.
She posed for a photograph in Port-Isaac, Cornwall, in front of the house which is used in the television show. The house is depicted as the doctors’s surgery in the fictitious town of Port Wenn.
She also was pictured with the bag at the Jamie Oliver Restaurant, Fifteen, in Watergate Bay, Cornwall.
The bag is now living with her mother-in-law Jean Haines and it is regularly sighted in the village of Carharrack, Cornwall. Mrs Loakes often writes to the the village magazine The Carharrack News, for the G’day from Australia column.
The photographs were delivered to The Recorder by Mrs Loakes mother, Sandra Jobson, of Port Pirie.
Mrs Jobson said she takes copies of our local newspaper to her daughter in Adelaide.
While discussing her daughter’s trip she said Mrs Loakes is married to an English man Troy, who is a musician and a builder.

I.C.E - Improving Carharrack's Environment
As I’m sat writing this report I’m looking out into our garden and the sun is shining, the daffodils are out and the birds are busy getting themselves ready for the year ahead!
Our Christmas celebrations in the village went really well as did our Firework display and we’d like to thank everyone who supported the events – it makes all the hard work so much easier when so many people turn up ( the many “thank - yous” helped as well) - next year will be even bigger and better !!
On 7th April this year we will be holding our Easter Fair. Come to the Mills Hall where there will be an Easter treasure hunt, Bonnet competition and more. Look out for more details on our advertising boards.
On 11th May, our playing field will officially be re-opened with the new wall and railings complete and we are planning a big celebration which will hopefully go on into the evening. We do hope that the weather will be kind to us and that there will be lots of support from all residents of the village.
Our final celebrations of the quarter will be the Royal Jubilee on Monday 4th June. There will be a street style party in the park which we hope all residents which join in with. The theme will be Union Jack based and as always anyone who is able to help out with the setting up and organizing of the day will be warmly welcomed.
On Tuesday 5th June we will be holding a “Afternoon Tea Dance” in the Mills Hall, Look out for more details in the next magazine.
As you can see it’s going to be another busy 3 months for the ICE group but we look forward to seeing you at all of our events and will continue to work hard to make Carharrack the great, little village it is.

CARHARRACK METHODIST CHURCH
Spring is with us again and we are looking forward to good weather and many local events.
First we must congratulate the Carharrack & St Day Silver Band on their Centenary year. Apart from St Piran’s Church and the Methodist Church the Band is the oldest organisation in the village.
Our offering on Christmas Morning for Visibility (the blind and partially sighted) amounted to £150.
Our services continue at 10.45am on Sunday mornings and there is a weekly fellowship Meeting on Wednesdays at 3pm. On Sunday mornings the young people attend the first part of morning worship before going to their various activities in the Junior Church room.

As some of you may know our Chairperson Jill Pooley has stepped down. As the current Chairperson I would like to thank Jill for all her hard work for the village and I will try and keep up the very high standard she set. Jill became a Parish Councillor in February, 1998, when she was co-opted on to the Council to replace Cllr. Alan Harris, she remained a Councillor until September, 2002, when she resigned due to family commitments.
She became a Councillor again following the elections in June, 2007, being elected Vice-Chairman by fellow Councillors and remained in this post until she become Chairman in January2010, following the resignation of Councillor Cathy Page.
Unfortunately Jill suffered a stroke in October, 2011, which prevented further attendances. so we now find ourselves with a seat to fill. Please contact me or the Parish Clerk Tony Reynolds, with a brief explanation why you wish to join the Council
We now have a very active Neighbourhood Watch Scheme and I have been informed that they will hopefully be starting a Youth Club in the village keep a look out for more information on this exiting news
I have also been informed by the ICE group that plans are underway for a big celebration for the playing field opening and the Queens Jubilee Don’t forget that the Parish council meet every third Monday in the month everyone is welcome to come along with any problems or concerns they may have
One complaint that we did receive and is being dealt with:
It may well have been noticed that the PUBLIC TELEPHONE BOX in Higher Albion Row is in poor condition.The Parish Council has made several approaches to British Telecom to give the box a thorough cleaning, since it is their policy not to replace aging boxes, and on each occasion has received an assurance that this would be attended to.However, nothing appears to have been done and although in these days of so many people having a mobile phone, the box is probably only used in emergencies, it does stand in a prominent position in the village and deserves to be in a better condition than it is.The Parish Council apologises that its attempts have not been successful but we will keep on the case.

Sunny Days Nursery
February Newsletter
It is amazing to realise that the school year is already half way though. The children grow up so fast, whether they are babies, toddlers or pre-schoolers and we constantly change what we do with each child in order to meet their developing needs and interests, both indoors and outside.
The pre-school room has been renovated and we have a new door to our outside area. This has meant
that children can play outside more easily. Our supply of wet weather gear, available for all our children and
practitioners, including our youngest babies, means that the children can keep dry outside. However some
quickly forget about the best clothing when they see water to play with, no matter how cold the weather! We use visual, as well as peer and adult support, to encourage children to think about how best to dress
for any occasion. At Sunny Days we realise the importance of being outdoors for both well being and learning. We make the use of our immediate space but also go on the field and around the villages exploring.
It seems like Christmas was ages ago but it was actually since the last village newsletter so is worth discussing here. As we approached Christmas we made the usual Christmas cards and decorate the trees. We wrote to Father Christmas asking for a gift for someone we loved, as well as one for ourselves. Many of the children chose their Mum’s, but some chose a best friend and one all her family. We also had an enjoyable Christmas party at St Day Chapel. The pre-school presented their nativity ‘a Christmas star’. This was supported by photographs of the children preparing for Christmas and acting out the story at Sunny Days. A large appreciative audience came to support us.
We then had a traditional party for all our children with Father Christmas, lots of food and games. Noisy but fun.
In the nursery room we are looking at how things move, including balloons, feathers and cars and clouds. Meanwhile in the pre-school we are exploring health and well being. We are looking at foods we eat and have turned our role play area into a gym. This is proving very popular. We have joined the Nippers Nutrition Scheme and ensure that our breakfast and snacks offer an appropriate range of age appropriate foods and children are given the right sized portions.
We are developing a range of story sacks to enhance children’s understanding and enjoyment of stories for all ages. Where appropriate we are encouraging the children to act out these stories or role play superhero play where children are encouraged to help each other to resolve a problem or help in ‘a life threatening situation’. For instance as the firemen hero’s went about their work they had to race to the moon to rescue children from danger. One child put a sandbag over his shoulder to represent the baby and carefully brought ‘him’ to safety. If you would like to know more about this please pop in.

Carharrack and St Day Silver Band had another successful Christmas season and the concert with St Day School was well attended.2012 is the band’s Centenary Year and they are hoping to run a number of events to celebrate.These will include discos, history of the band, quizzes and most importantly music.Flyers and posters as well as updates in future newsletters will give finalised details so please keep your eyes open.

Saturday 5th May – History of the band – Mills Hall, afternoon event and evening Talk
Friday 15th June – Mills Hall – Quiz night

Should any adults wish to join the band they are very welcome and can call into the band room at Mills Hall Wednesday and Friday evening from 7.30pm to 9pm to talk to someone.

CARHARRACK OLD CORNWALL SOCIETY
As I am writing this the weather outside is superb, the dull lifeless days of February have departed and spring “March”es in.It was great to see the refurbishments being made to the walls of the playing fields. The old ones had done well to last since the early 1930’s, but were coming up for major repairs anyway. When the entrance archway is in place we have a feature of which to be proud. One point to mention before I list the forthcoming society events; if ever you are doing any renovations etc to your property please be on the lookout for any items being them broken ,or otherwise, that might relate to our villages past history. For example old Codd type pop bottles that contained the ‘allies’, or ceramic ginger beer ones that contained the “hard stuff". Recently during some building work Brian Arthur came across some old granite sett stones that once supported the rails on the Redruth & Chasewater [ it was spelt this way back in the 1820’s] Railway that trundled through our village from 1826 to 1915.He kindly passed them on to our society and a few weeks ago two of them were added to the ones now in place along Pennance Road. Thanks again Brian for the donation.

OUTGOING POSTMAN
Doesn’t twenty one years fly by, it seems like only yesterday that I was told that Mr Billy Penrose was retiring. Well I thought “Nice easy job” I’ll go for that and so I got the job. It began with 8 hours a week then over the next two and a half years, with my colleague giving me her unwanted hours, I was up to about 28 hours a week. As the majority of you will know, my colleague and myself worked out the back of the then Post Office, prepping the mail and packets for the Carharrack delivery. During the next 10 years with the increase in the volume of mail I managed to reach the dizzy heights of 34 hours per week.
Over the years I have had to deliver some awkward parcels which should have been delivered by the parent office, for example; a surf board, an ironing board and a flat pack wardrobe! In the latter years with internet shopping and ebay, the packets have increased 10 fold which makes this volume difficult to carry. I have had several dog bites during my working travels, the worst being attacked by 4 collie dogs at the same time. Luckily for me, it happened to be a Monday [dustbin day], so I managed to arm myself with a steel dustbin lid to protect myself, terrific entertainment for the nearby dustbin men watching. Fortunately after about 4 minutes the embarrassed owner came running up the road to my rescue.
Just over three years ago the Royal Mail decided to close the village Post Office, due to its geographical position, this then in turn meant my colleague and myself were relocated to Redruth, although we were doing exactly the same job, the parameters of the job had to be changed. The prepped mail had to be delivered by van to a drop off point in the village, where my colleague and myself could collect it for delivery to the public.
The closing of the Post Office has caused some concerns for myself and the public; first I had to purchase a vehicle to transport me to my place of work, then the public have had to go to Redruth to collect their undelivered packets, or they can elect to have it delivered at a later date.
Over the last 21 years I have done my best with your mail and enjoyed the delivery side of the job.I am sure that during my retirement we will see each other around the village.

CARHARRACK PLAYERS
The Carharrack Players would firstly like to thank all of you who came to see our latest pantomime, The Sleeping Beauty. A huge thank you must go to Margaret Dawes for directing another wonderful show. A production of that size takes a lot of planning and has lots of other people to thank (too many to mention as I’m sure to miss out someone.) So on behalf of the committee, we would like to thank all the people involved, the full back stage crew, lighting and sound crew, and the cast on stage, the wardrobe ladies, and the tea room ladies. Without all these people it just would not happen. Without your continued support we would not be able to even think about our next production. What is it? I hear you ask. Well under the direction of Linda Williams, the group will be putting on a play in July, so watch out for the posters in June.
If you are aged over 18yrs and would like to join us, we can always find room for new members, please contact 01209 215109, for a chat. If you don't want to be on stage we have lots of other areas within the group which need some fresh input. It is unfortunate that we don't have any room in the children's troupe for next year’s pantomime, but watch this space, as soon as we need more we will let you know.

Cornwall Councillor Mark Kaczmarek Report
Dear resident
Some people are aware of the growing pressure put upon Cornwall Council to release the names of councillors that have received letters or even taken to the courts over the non payment of council tax. Please be assured that I have always paid mine on time and do so by direct debit.
Bus services
Until the 2011 Local Government financial settlement the Government provide a ring fenced grant to reimburse bus operators for providing free travel to concessionary pass holders. Cornwall ’s budget from that arrangement allowed us to reimburse operators at a rate of 73.5% of the average adult single fare. Failure to have spent the ring fenced funding on concessionary travel would have seen the remaining budget returned to the Government. From April 2011 the Government has removed the ring fencing and reduced the budget. With budget pressures this has allowed the flexibility to reimburse operators, from 1 April 2012, at a rate of 50% of the average adult fare. This rate is still a little higher than the rate determined by the Department for Transport as being sufficient to reimburse bus operators.
Where bus operators feel they can run services without subsidy they do so as commercial services, whilst still claiming reimbursement for concessionary travellers. In Cornwall there are 147 local bus services - 52 operate commercially, 31 operate with a 100% Council subsidy and 64 operate with partial subsidy (that is, with some journeys being Council funded). The 540 is a wholly subsidised service, as patronage does not make it commercially viable. To secure value for money on the subsidised bus services, the Council is required to tender for the operation of those services
The Council was aware that by reducing the concessionary fare reimbursement rate that operators may be disadvantaged if they were held to their previously tendered subsidies so it was decided to retender all subsidised services. Notice was given to operators that all subsidised service contracts would end on 31 March 2012 and that the ongoing tender exercise would establish the new operator on those services from 1 April 2012, giving continuity of service for bus passengers. Some operators have placed notices stating their service will end on 31 March but have not given the full picture.
To determine the level of services it will subsidise, the Council defines a minimum network such that public transport access is provided to as many parts of the Cornish community as reasonably practicable. Where commercial services exist, the Council may chose to enhance that service but cannot tender a competing service. In the absence of services, the Council may provide a wholly subsidised service, like the 540 which serves the Mining Villages.
As raised in my last report in the newsletter I asked for those groups and organisations within the community to come forward if they needed some funding from my community grant funding pot, I am pleased to say that I have had an excellent response and will be supporting the applications currently submitted.
